Naver Opens Agentic Search to 50 Million Daily Users
South Korea's dominant internet platform Naver Corp (035420.KS) officially launched its AI Tab service to all users on June 26, rolling out what the company calls an "agentic search" layer to the 50 million people who visit its main page daily — a step change from the conventional link-and-summary search paradigm that has defined Korean digital commerce for two decades.
The move converts Naver's search entry point into an AI-guided action hub where users can shop, make restaurant or hotel reservations, and discover local services without leaving the search experience. The interface, powered by a product-native large language model built on top of HyperCLOVA X, replaces Naver's legacy "Green Dot" visual and repositions the Smart Lens multimodal tool next to the main search bar.
Beta Results Justify Full Rollout
Naver began testing AI Tab in April with Naver Plus Membership subscribers and accumulated over 4 million cumulative users in roughly two months. The beta metrics underpinned the decision to go live for all users:
| Metric | Beta Result |
|---|---|
| Product card click-through rate | >20% |
| Place card click-through rate | >20% |
| Product clicks (11+ visits vs. 1 visit) | 2.7× higher |
| Place clicks (11+ visits vs. 1 visit) | 2× higher |
Naver Map integration now shows real-time reservation availability, and a music-search feature is embedded directly in the AI Tab interface. A conversational chat layer beneath AI Briefing results is planned to launch within the coming weeks.
Q1 Backdrop: Revenue Growth Accelerating Into Launch
The AI Tab launch arrives as Naver reports accelerating top-line momentum. First-quarter 2026 consolidated revenue reached KRW 3.2411 trillion (+16.3% year-on-year), with operating profit of KRW 541.8 billion (+7.2% YoY). Commerce and C2C platforms were key drivers, precisely the segments AI Tab is designed to deepen.
The platform revenue segment — search advertising, shopping, and display — contributed KRW 1.8398 trillion, while Global Challenge (mainly C2C and international) added KRW 941.6 billion. By shifting search clicks toward in-session transactions, Naver weighs whether higher CTR on AI-surfaced product cards can compress the gap between ad revenue and commerce commission income.
H2 2026 Roadmap: Real Estate and Healthcare Agents
Naver outlined two vertical-specific AI agents for the second half of this year:
- Real Estate Agent: Personalized property recommendations filtered by user budget, location preference, and commute profile
- Healthcare Agent: Users upload lab results or clinic notes and receive personalized lifestyle and wellness guidance
The company also plans to extend AI Tab to its Whale desktop web browser, potentially broadening the monetization surface beyond mobile.
Competitive Context
The launch accelerates a strategic repositioning Naver began earlier this year. In April, Naver shut down its standalone Clova X assistant — a separate conversational AI app — and channelled its engineering resources into embedding AI capabilities directly into the main search product. The pivot mirrors strategies being pursued globally by Google (AI Overviews), Perplexity, and domestic rival Kakao (035720.KS), which is building its own agentic AI stack ahead of its 2026 labor disruption settlement.
With AI Tab now live for 50 million daily users, Naver's near-term test is whether the 20%-plus click-through rates observed in the beta phase hold at scale — and whether frequent users's 2.7× purchase propensity translates into measurable uplift in commerce commission revenue in Q2 2026 results, expected in late July.
