Hyundai Motor and Kia Q2 2026 Earnings Preview: Fire, Tariffs, and a Surprising Divergence

TL;DR - Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) reports Q2 on July 23 — sell-side consensus: OP ₩3.1T (-13.9% YoY), revenue ₩48.7T - Kia (000270.KS) reports Q2 on July 24 — consensus: OP ₩2.79T (+0.7% YoY), revenue ₩32.4T - Triple headwind for Hyundai: Anjeon Industrial supplier fire cut domestic output; 25% US tariffs lifted incentive costs; won appreciation compressed overseas earnings - Brokerages split: Kiwoom cut target to ₩700K; DS Investment raised to ₩840K on Boston Dynamics robotics optionality

Part A — What the Numbers Show

Both Hyundai Motor Group's major listed entities report within 24 hours of each other — the automotive sector's entry into Korea's Q2 2026 earnings season, a week that already includes SK Hynix (July 22) and the four big banking groups (July 23–24).

The preview tells a tale of two strategies: Hyundai's legacy model lineup and EV build-out collided with a supplier fire and persistent tariff pressure. Kia, running a leaner hybrid-forward mix, expects a modest gain.

OP Margin5.5%~7.5%~6.4%-1.1pp

Consensus: BigGo Finance / Korea Economic Daily (July 11, 2026). Q2 2025 actuals: Hyundai IR.

Three factors drove the year-on-year decline:

1. Anjeon Industrial fire A fire at Anjeon Industrial — a key domestic parts supplier — disrupted production at plants building the Santa Fe and other models. Kiwoom Securities estimated domestic wholesale volume falling roughly 16% year-on-year in Q2. On the positive side, Q1 2026 already absorbed the worst of the disruption (OP -30.8% YoY that quarter); the Q2 consensus implies a 23% sequential recovery.

2. 25% US auto tariffs US tariffs on Korean-built vehicles have remained at 25% since April 2025. During the Q2 2025 earnings call, Hyundai's CFO cited a ₩828.5 billion direct tariff drag for that quarter under the same rate. With Hyundai expanding US incentives to defend market share — and US market share actually rising to 6.0% in Q1 2026 — the profitability squeeze has continued. Hyundai has committed $26 billion in US investment, partially as strategic leverage in tariff negotiations.

3. Won appreciation The Korean won strengthened against both the dollar and euro in H1 2026. Korea Economic Daily (July 11) cited an estimated ₩400 billion cumulative H1 FX-related warranty reserve charge at Hyundai. A stronger won reduces the won value of overseas revenue and can generate derivative-related charges.

Kia (000270.KS) — Earnings: July 24, 2026

MetricQ1 2026 ActualQ2 2025 ActualQ2 2026 ConsensusYoY
Revenue₩29.5T~₩29.4T (implied)₩32.4T+10.2%
Operating Profit₩2.21T~₩2.77T (implied)₩2.79T+0.7%
Global Sales (units)N/A~816K~850K+4%

Q2 2025 figures implied from consensus YoY. Kia Q1 2026 actuals: Kia IR.

Kia's positive divergence reflects a structural product-mix advantage: Sorento and Sportage hybrid variants — which carry higher transaction prices than ICE equivalents — dominated the Q2 mix. International markets, particularly in Europe and Australia, absorbed Kia's RV lineup above industry average pricing. Kia was also less exposed to the Anjeon fire owing to a different domestic parts supply chain.

Part B — Investment Analysis

The Valuation Disconnect

Hyundai Motor shares closed at ₩425,000 on July 17, against a 31-analyst average price target of roughly ₩733,000 (Investing.com). That implies approximately 72% upside — one of the largest discount-to-consensus gaps among KOSPI 200 heavyweights. Individual broker targets span from ₩700,000 (Kiwoom Securities) to ₩840,000 (DS Investment & Securities), with 26 of 31 analysts maintaining a Buy rating.

Foreign investor ownership in Hyundai Motor declined notably during H1 2026, per Korea Economic Daily, reflecting both uncertainty around US tariff outcomes and a wait-and-see posture ahead of the H2 model cycle.

Brokerages Split

Kiwoom Securities cut its 12-month target from ₩750,000 to ₩700,000, flagging weak near-term volume and margin visibility. The firm projects Q2 OP at ₩2.83T — a more conservative estimate than the broader sell-side consensus of ₩3.1T.

DS Investment & Securities moved the opposite direction, raising its target from ₩740,000 to ₩840,000 based on the Boston Dynamics integration thesis: 25,000 Atlas humanoid robots are cleared for Hyundai and Kia factory floors beginning in 2028 (HMGMA Georgia facility), with unit economics improving from approximately $130,000–$140,000 initially to an estimated $30,000 at cumulative production of 50,000 units. That long-dated optionality is increasingly factored into DS's sum-of-parts model.

The H2 Recovery Thesis

Shinhan Securities projects a sharp rebound in H2 2026:

QuarterOP ForecastYoY Change
Q3 2026₩3.2T+26.6%
Q4 2026₩3.1T+80.3%

The drivers: (1) the eighth-generation Avante launch, (2) the refreshed Tucson, and (3) the Ioniq 3 in European markets — all entering production by H2. If Anjeon disruption normalizes by Q3, the base comparison also becomes sharply favorable (Q4 2025 OP was depressed by tariff-related charges).

Three Things to Watch on July 23–24

  1. Tariff negotiation update: Any signal on a US-Korea auto trade deal would move both stocks. Hyundai's $26B US investment commitment is expected to feature in diplomatic talks.
  2. Anjeon recovery timeline: Confirmation that domestic production has normalized by Q3 would validate the H2 rebound thesis.
  3. Kia hybrid mix guidance: Kia's Q1 electrified share reached an estimated 27%+ of volume. Updated H2 hybrid order data is watched by analysts positioning ahead of the full-year margin call.

Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and Kia Corporation (000270.KS) are listed on the Korea Exchange (KRX). US OTC ADRs: HYMTF (Hyundai), KIMTF (Kia). This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
