SK Telecom (017670.KS) Q1 2026: Wireless Margin Plunges 14.5% as ₩1.7T Capital Reserve Transfer Loads Dividend Firepower

Mobile operating profit dropped ₩70 billion while management quietly expanded distributable reserves by ₩1.7 trillion — a louder capital-allocation signal than the quarterly margin slip.

Source: Quarterly Report (Q1 FY2026, 43rd Fiscal Year) — Filed 2026.05.15 with DART | Consolidated Financial Statements | Unit: ₩ billions

With 17.8 million 5G subscribers and 81% penetration locking the domestic mobile market into maturity, SK Telecom's core wireless margin slipped again in Q1 2026. Wireless operating profit fell to ₩414.9 billion from ₩485.1 billion a year earlier — a 14.5% decline — while SK Broadband's data-center build-out lifted fixed-line operating profit by 19.5%, capping consolidated operating profit at ₩537.6 billion, down only 5.25% year-on-year. The real headline, however, sits in the equity section: a ₩1.7 trillion transfer from capital reserves into retained earnings during the quarter pre-loads the legal ceiling for future dividends and buybacks — a capital-allocation signal that overshadows the quarter's margin softness.

Balance Sheet — Total Assets Flat, but ₩1.7 Trillion Moved Inside Equity

Major Asset Items

Item FY2025 (₩ trillion) Q1 2026 (₩ trillion) Change
Cash and cash equivalents 1.49 1.47 -1.0%
Trade receivables 1.92 1.96 +2.1%
Inventories 0.17 0.20 +20.5%
Property, plant and equipment 11.90 11.35 -4.7%
Intangible assets 1.71 1.55 -9.4%
Goodwill 2.07 2.07 0.0%
Long-term investments 3.19 3.29 +3.1%
Total assets 30.11 30.02 -0.3%

Total assets contracted by just ₩85.8 billion, leaving the overall footprint flat. The internal composition, however, shifted clearly. PP&E fell ₩553.5 billion (₩11.90T → ₩11.35T) and intangibles dropped ₩160.4 billion (₩1.71T → ₩1.55T). Cash-flow-statement CapEx for the quarter totaled ₩382.7 billion (PP&E ₩361.3B + intangibles ₩21.4B), down 30.8% from ₩553.4 billion a year earlier. In other words, capital spending — historically dominated by wireless network roll-out — has entered a meaningfully lighter phase. Long-term investments rose ₩99.0 billion, capturing the company's expanding AI infrastructure stakes in SAPEON and Astra AI Infra. The book value of Rebellions (35.1% common-share interest, 18.1% voting interest) booked under equity-method investments declined from ₩187.4 billion to ₩169.3 billion, an ₩18.1 billion drop driven by Rebellions' own net assets sliding deeper into deficit at -₩506.5 billion.

Liability Structure — ₩7.26T Bonds, ₩0.73T Borrowings, ₩1.43T Lease

Item FY2025 (₩ trillion) Q1 2026 (₩ trillion) Change
Short-term borrowings 0.13 0.13 0.0%
Current portion of bonds & LT debt 1.12 1.09 -2.9%
Bonds (non-current) 7.29 7.26 -0.4%
Long-term borrowings (non-current) 0.30 0.30 0.0%
Lease liabilities (current + non-current) 1.53 1.43 -6.1%
Trade & other payables 3.03 2.74 -9.7%
Total liabilities 17.15 16.67 -2.8%

Total liabilities fell ₩478.1 billion in the quarter. Bond issuance of ₩239.0 billion against redemptions of ₩380.0 billion produced a net bond decrease of ₩31.0 billion, while ₩369.2 billion of long-term payables were repaid, keeping interest-bearing debt under conservative discipline. The debt-to-equity ratio improved 7.5 percentage points from 132.4% to 124.9%. Among non-current liabilities, deferred tax liabilities of ₩1,445.9 billion remain largely intact through the capital-reserve reclassification — a reassignment within equity is not a taxable event, so this is the expected accounting outcome. Operating payables (trade payables, accrued expenses, other payables combined) totaled ₩2,736.8 billion, ₩296.9 billion lower than year-end, a movement that closely mirrors the ₩291.8 billion negative working-capital swing inside operating cash flow.

Equity — Retained Earnings Rose ₩1.997 Trillion, but Quarterly Profit Was Only ₩322.4 Billion

Total equity rose from ₩12.96 trillion to ₩13.35 trillion, an increase of ₩392.4 billion. The vast majority of that increase, however, is an intra-equity reclassification rather than fresh value creation. During the quarter ₩1.70 trillion was transferred from capital reserves to retained earnings: other paid-in capital deepened from -₩12.13 trillion to -₩13.85 trillion (a ₩1.72 trillion movement), while the same amount lifted retained earnings from ₩22.94 trillion to ₩24.94 trillion (+₩1.997 trillion). On top of that came ₩322.4 billion in quarterly controlling-interest net income, -₩5.0 billion in hybrid-bond interest, and +₩1.2 billion from treasury-share disposal tied to stock-option exercises. Treasury shares decreased from 1,807,778 to 1,789,157 — a reduction of 18,621 shares, leaving 0.83% of outstanding stock in treasury. The annual dividend payment in Q1 was ₩0, against ₩223.5 billion (controlling-interest basis) paid out a year earlier.

The strategic significance of the ₩1.7 trillion capital-reserve transfer is the critical reading. Under Korean Commercial Code, distributable income is capped by the retained-earnings balance, so this transfer is best understood as a pre-emptive expansion of the legal ceiling for future dividends and share buybacks by ₩1.7 trillion. That mechanical lift in the shareholder-return envelope is why the move carries weight well beyond a routine accounting reclassification.

Income Statement — Core Business Wobbles as AI Affiliate Losses Pile On

Core Profitability Metrics

Item Q1 2025 (₩ billion) Q1 2026 (₩ billion) Change
Revenue 4,453.7 4,392.3 -1.4%
Operating profit 567.4 537.6 -5.25%
Operating margin 12.74% 12.24% -0.5pp
Equity-method & subsidiary income +0.1 -15.1 Swung to loss
Pre-tax profit 507.9 465.6 -8.3%
Net income 361.6 316.4 -12.5%
Net income (controlling) 364.4 322.4 -11.5%
Basic EPS (₩) 1,689 1,490 -11.8%

The 5.25% drop in operating profit is 3.75 times steeper than the 1.4% revenue decline. The amplification is the unmistakable mark of negative operating leverage: in a telecom cost structure dominated by fixed line items, even a 1% revenue contraction puts disproportionate pressure on the margin. Net income (-12.5%) fell even more sharply than operating profit (-5.25%), and the decisive cause was the swing in equity-method and subsidiary results from +₩0.1 billion to -₩15.1 billion — a ₩15.2 billion deterioration. Rebellions, in which SKT holds a 35.1% common-share stake, saw its own net assets erode further to -₩506.5 billion as accumulated deficits widened. The early-stage loss-recognition cycle of an AI-chip affiliate has now begun to print visibly through to SKT's consolidated P&L.

Operating Cost Detail — Labor and D&A Down, but Service Fees Up

Item Q1 2025 (₩ billion) Q1 2026 (₩ billion) Change (₩ billion) Change
Employee benefits 671.6 634.3 -37.3 -5.6%
Service fees 1,325.1 1,365.0 +39.9 +3.0%
Depreciation & amortization 867.2 846.5 -20.7 -2.4%
Network interconnection fees 163.9 154.4 -9.5 -5.8%
Advertising 33.9 27.6 -6.3 -18.8%
Cost of goods sold 327.8 325.1 -2.7 -0.8%
Other operating expenses 393.0 403.7 +10.7 +2.7%
Total operating expenses 3,886.3 3,854.7 -31.6 -0.8%

Operating expenses fell by only ₩31.6 billion, failing to keep pace with the ₩61.4 billion revenue contraction. Cuts in labor (-₩37.3B), D&A (-₩20.7B), interconnection (-₩9.5B), and advertising (-₩6.3B) added up to ₩73.8 billion in combined savings, but service fees rose ₩39.9 billion and erased more than half of those gains. The increase in service fees reflects higher IT outsourcing and platform fees, aligning with external spending on A.X foundation-model training and AI data-center build-out work. The 5.6% drop in employee benefits suggests headcount efficiency in the legacy telecom workforce continues to advance.

Segment Performance — Wireless and Fixed-Line Move in Opposite Directions

Segment (External Revenue) Q1 2025 Revenue (₩B) Q1 2026 Revenue (₩B) Rev. Change Q1 2025 OP (₩B) Q1 2026 OP (₩B) OP Change
Wireless telecom 3,303.4 3,268.8 -1.0% 485.1 414.9 -14.5%
Fixed-line telecom 1,034.1 1,049.2 +1.5% 101.0 120.7 +19.5%
Other businesses 116.2 74.3 -36.1% -6.9 +2.7 Turned positive
Total (after adjustments) 4,453.7 4,392.3 -1.4% 567.4 537.6 -5.25%

The wireless segment is the swing factor for consolidated margins. A 1.0% revenue dip paired with a 14.5% operating-profit decline means the wireless operating margin fell 2.0 percentage points, from 14.7% to 12.7%. The fixed-line segment moved in the opposite direction: revenue +1.5%, operating profit +19.5%, lifting the segment margin 1.7 percentage points from 9.8% to 11.5%. SK Broadband's quarterly revenue reached ₩1,149.8 billion (+3.2% YoY), and within that the fixed-line slice (including data centers and dedicated circuits) grew 6.7% to ₩677.9 billion, while media (IPTV/cable) shrank 1.3%. The shift from legacy media toward data-center-driven B2B shows up far more sharply in the margin progression than in the headline revenue total. The other-businesses segment (SK Stoa) returned to a quarterly operating profit — a small swing in absolute terms, but a meaningful break from chronic losses of -₩64.9 billion in FY2024 and -₩30.6 billion in FY2025.

Cash Flow — Operating CF Down 15%, but FCF Nearly Intact as CapEx Drops 31%

Item Q1 2025 (₩ billion) Q1 2026 (₩ billion) Change
Operating cash flow 1,252.0 1,064.2 -187.8
└ Cash from operations 1,342.1 1,164.0 -178.1
└ Interest received 15.3 9.9 -5.3
└ Interest paid -110.5 -94.2 +16.3
└ Income taxes paid -2.3 -22.1 -19.8
Investing cash flow -463.7 -477.0 -13.3
└ PP&E acquisitions (CapEx) -542.3 -361.3 +181.0
└ Intangible-asset acquisitions -11.1 -21.4 -10.3
Financing cash flow -515.6 -610.3 -94.7
└ Bond issuance +430.3 +239.0 -191.3
└ Bond redemption -487.3 -380.0 +107.3
└ Long-term payables repaid -369.2 -369.2 0
└ Annual dividend paid (-225.1)* 0 +225.1
Ending cash balance 2,297.2 1,474.7 -822.5

Prior-year Q1 annual dividend of ₩225.1B was reflected in the statement of changes in equity; the CF statement consolidates the movement rather than presenting it as a separate financing line.

Quarterly operating cash flow of ₩1,064.2 billion came in 15.0% below the ₩1,252.0 billion generated a year earlier. Over the same window, however, CapEx (PP&E plus intangibles) dropped 30.8% from ₩553.4 billion to ₩382.7 billion, leaving quarterly free cash flow at ₩681.5 billion versus ₩698.6 billion — a contraction of only ₩17.1 billion, or 2.4%. Capex cuts absorbed more than 90% of the operating cash-flow shortfall. Roughly half of the CapEx reduction (~₩90 billion) likely reflects quarterly timing, while the rest reads as a structural step-down following the end of the 5G network investment cycle. Investment-disclosure detail in the quarterly report shows year-to-date new investment of ₩37.0 billion in wireless and ₩99.0 billion in fixed-line (SK Broadband standalone basis), summing to ₩136.0 billion — corroborating that telecom-infrastructure CapEx burden is now in a meaningful relief phase. The earnings-quality ratio (operating CF / net income) sits at 3.36×, well above the telecom industry average, because quarterly D&A of ₩846.5 billion is 2.7× quarterly net income of ₩316.4 billion. The takeaway is that cash generation remains far more durable than the slowing accounting-profit line implies.

Key Findings

ARPU and subscriber dynamics. Wireless subscriber lines rose from 33,365 thousand at year-end FY2025 to 33,580 thousand at Q1 2026, a net add of 215 thousand lines. 5G subscribers reached 17.8 million at 81% penetration — squarely in the mature phase. Mobile market share (excluding MVNO) moved from 45.3% in FY2024 to 42.7% in FY2025 and 42.8% in Q1 2026, recovering modestly on a quarter-on-quarter basis after losing 2.6 percentage points over the prior year. Estimated wireless ARPU works out to roughly ₩32,438 per month (external wireless revenue ₩3,268.8 billion ÷ 33,580 thousand lines ÷ 3 months), versus ₩32,565 a year earlier — a decline of only about 0.4%. ARPU defense itself is solid, but slowing line additions and stalled share point to a structural ceiling on core-business growth.

5G CapEx cycle ending, capital rotating to AI data centers. Q1 CapEx of ₩382.7 billion is just 69% of last year's ₩553.4 billion. As wireless-network investment commitments wind down, the freed-up cash is rotating visibly into SK Broadband data centers and AI-infrastructure affiliates — Astra AI Infra, SAPEON, and Rebellions. SK Broadband's 6.7% fixed-line revenue growth is a direct effect of new DC capacity entering service, as management itself has noted.

Rebellions losses accumulating. Equity-method affiliate Rebellions saw net assets deteriorate from -₩462.5 billion at year-end FY2025 to -₩506.5 billion at Q1 2026, a ₩44.0 billion incremental loss during the quarter. SKT's quarterly equity-method loss is estimated in the ~₩15 billion range, consistent with its 35.1% common-share stake. The AI-chip NPU business sits in an early-stage R&D-intensive window, so this drag on equity-method results is likely to continue for another one to two years. This dynamic is the direct reason net income fell 2.4× as steeply as operating profit: equity-method and subsidiary results swung from +₩0.1 billion last year to -₩15.1 billion this quarter, a ₩15.2 billion adverse move.

R&D intensity and the A.X foundation model. The quarterly R&D-to-revenue ratio came in at 2.07% of ₩4,392.3 billion in revenue — about ₩90.9 billion. That marks a small step down from 2.08% in FY2025 and 2.19% in FY2024, but the composition of R&D has shifted decisively toward LLM and AI agent work: A.X K2 LLM pre-training, in-house Vision Language model encoder development, and AICC platform enhancement. Passing the second-round milestone evaluation of the Korean government's "Dokpamo" (Korean Sovereign AI Foundation Model) program is a positive signal for future government project wins.

Contingent liabilities and litigation. The quarterly report's contingent-liability footnote disclosures note SK Broadband providing a ₩1.198 billion mortgage on a portion of its Nowon switching-station property tied to a building-lease arrangement; no other material unrecognized contingent liabilities of a magnitude capable of moving quarterly earnings have been disclosed. Given the nature of the telecom business, however, personal-information and security-related risks warrant continuous qualitative monitoring — a point reinforced by the explicit listing of "hacking-risk hedging and security enhancement" as an R&D agenda item.

Interest-rate and FX risk. Variable-rate Korean-won borrowings and bonds are fully hedged via interest-rate swaps, so quarterly P&L exposure to rate movements is effectively neutralized. Non-current bonds of ₩7.26 trillion declined ₩30.7 billion during the quarter on a balance-sheet basis (after issuance of ₩239.0 billion and redemption of ₩380.0 billion, net of current-portion reclassification and discount amortization adjustments). The coupon range spans 1.39% on early-2020s issuance through 4.28% on more recent tranches. Refinancing maturities at higher prevailing yields remains a forward cost-pressure factor to monitor.

Outlook

What grew. Fixed-line operating profit rose 19.5% (₩101.0B → ₩120.7B, a ₩19.7 billion gain) on data-center and B2B revenue strength. Within SK Broadband's ₩1,149.8 billion quarterly revenue, the fixed-line slice including data centers reached ₩677.9 billion (+6.7%), offsetting a 1.3% slip in the media business. CapEx fell 30.8%, allowing FCF to be defended, and the debt-to-equity ratio improved from 132.4% to 124.9%. The mobile market share (excluding MVNO) inching back up from 42.7% in FY2025 to 42.8% in Q1 2026 is small but a meaningful directional signal.

What is at risk. Wireless operating profit dropped 14.5%, dragging the core-business margin down 2.0 percentage points from 14.7% to 12.7%. Revenue -1.4% translated into operating profit -5.25% and net income -12.5% — operating leverage running in reverse. Equity-method losses at Rebellions accumulated by another ₩44.0 billion this quarter and are now flowing meaningfully through to consolidated P&L, with another one to two years of similar drag likely. With 17.8 million 5G subscribers at 81% penetration, the subscriber-growth runway is structurally limited.

Capital allocation. The most consequential decision in the quarter was the ₩1.70 trillion transfer from capital reserves into retained earnings. This is a clear-cut, deliberate expansion of the distributable-income ceiling under Korean Commercial Code and reads unambiguously as preparation for stepped-up shareholder returns. The Q1 annual dividend dropping from ₩223.5 billion to zero appears to be a timing effect, and the ₩1.7 trillion of newly available payout headroom answers the strategic question of what management intends to do with the cash freed by the end of the 5G investment cycle — a two-track allocation: AI affiliate funding plus shareholder returns. With wireless CapEx down 30.8% from ₩553.4 billion to ₩382.7 billion, the vacated capital is moving into AI data centers, the A.X LLM, and equity stakes in AI affiliates. Whether the returns from this capital rotation can mask the structural deceleration in core wireless margins over the next eight to twelve quarters will be the decisive question for the medium-term investment case.
